What is that Galette des rois about?!

It is true, French people get really excited about this treat!

But you have to understand: it is REALLY GOOD and you can only have it in January!

One month is little time to plan all the galettes you want to devour!
In France, we try to make the most of it: one for the office, one for our friends, one for the family and another one for all our groups of friends.
You want to eat as many as you can!
The little ceramic token (called fève) that is placed in the cake use to be a real bean or a coin. Nowadays, we get beautiful collections of fève. In French, people who collect them are called "fabophilles" from the Greek 'faba' (fève) and 'philos'(who loves). Will you collect all ours?

These galettes are made of puff pastry & frangipane cream (almond + vanilla cream): when simple flavours and textures come together to create an amazing dessert!

How did it all start?

It was to celebrate the religious day of Epiphany on January 6th! (Three kings' visit to baby Jesus) The term itself means "apparition" in Greek.

FUN CAKE CUTTING TRADITION:

Traditionally, the oldest person cuts the galette in as many pieces as there are guests, plus one.

This slice is for the 'poor', or stranger who might happen to stop by (also called God and the Virgin's share).

The youngest, (usually a child) would go under the table. The older person would then pick up a slice and ask: "Who is this for?" and the youngest would reply with a name from the guests around the table. This process goes on until all slices have been all distributed!

The king or the queen is the person who finds the 'féve' in their slice!

They are royalty all day and can opt out of doing chores, or anything fun that friends or family decide! In offices, they can be the ones to buy the next galette!
